MALTON COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT

About us
The Malton Community Building Project is a five-year project (2008-2013). The project began in April 2008 and is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The project was created to promote greater civic engagement and community development in Malton by empowering adult and youth leadership in the Black Community with the aim of developing and strengthening new and existing formal and informal community networks. The Malton Community Building Project focuses on community engagement, collaboration, parent education, health, literacy, recreation, support, training and sustainability. “Black Community” refers to people of African ancestry who self-identify with that ancestry.

Objectives of the Project

incorporated into Malton Community Festival)
2. To recruit, train and engage volunteer community leaders from Malton’s Black Community in both
formal leadership roles (eg committees and boards) and informal leadership roles by evolving new
informal volunteer-led activities and/or social networks, using a paid-honoraria approach to off set
potential cost-prohibiting factors such as food, transportation or child care expenses
3. To nurture and encourage greater awareness of and participation in existing and/or new community
programs by residents of Malton’s Black Community
4. To develop a Malton-based communication strategy to promote social and recreational services
available to the Malton Community (via establishment of a community web-based bulletin board, via
multi-lingual flyer distribution in neighbourhood settings, and via events such as Malton Festival,
parent-teacher nights, etc)
