| Settlement and Community Services |
For Newcomers to Canada, we provide:
- Assistance with translation and interpretation of documents.
- Help in filling out government documents, including applications for Canadian landed status and citizenship, pension and child tax deductions, Canadian passports, social insurance numbers and Ontario health insurance cards.
- Assistance in preparing documentation for supportive housing accommodation.
- Job search workshops, career counseling, referrals for mentoring assistance, help in preparing resumes, cover letters and in facilitating job searches.
- Personal referral, counseling and information services.
For Women and Families we provide:
- We provide advocacy support and personal supportive counseling and referral services
- We offer parenting workshops and other family support programs, conducted by professionals in various fields which address issues that impact on family life, such as health, nutrition, budget management.
- In partnership with Interim Place, a women's shelter, and The HEAL Network, we offer referral and other supportive services for women and children who have experienced abuse. All personal information provided and meetings are kept strictly confidential.
- We also join with the rest of Canada in celebrating International Women's Day and other special events such as Black History Month, South Asian Heritage Day, as well as various religious celebrations.
For Youth:
- We provide programs to bring youth together to engage in various youth-led projects that give them an opportunity to exercise and develop their leadership skills.
- We have a homework club to provide assistance for students in elementary school. High school students volunteer as tutors to earn their community service hours. Tutors can gain useful work experience and an opportunity to build on their communication and leadership skills.
- We offer personal and family supportive counseling services.
- Every summer, we conduct two fun-filled recreational camps for children in July and August.
For Seniors:
- We facilitate weekly meetings where seniors can drop-in and interact with other seniors.
- We organize games, interesting group trips, presentations and many fun activities.
- We offer assistance in preparing income tax returns and other government forms.
Newcomers and other People Seeking Employment:
- Can get help in preparing resumes and cover letters.
- Are provided with job search assistance and help in preparing for job interviews.
- Have access to the internet and computers to facilitate their job searches.
- Can drop-in to access our jobs bulletin board, which is updated weekly with available positions from a variety of sources, including daily and community newspapers, the internet, personnel agencies, and at times, with postings from our contacts in other companies.
- Newcomers can join our job search workshops to get personal help in developing their job search skills and ability to write their own resumes and cover letters. Workshop participants learn about Canadian economic environment and job cultures and how to get beyond the hidden job market and the often cited 'no Canadian work experience' barrier posed by employers. Workshop participants also benefit from the networking opportunities a group offers, and by the ongoing moral support received from other group members. As well, we offer career mentoring assistance for newcomer professionals.
